SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WAND) — State representatives passed a bill Monday night to require all assisted living and shared homes to have an AED on-site

Rep. Natalie Manley (D-Joliet) presents a proposal before the House Human Services Committee on March 26, 2025.

The legislation also calls for all healthcare employees at the facilities to be trained on how to use defibrillators in emergencies.

54% of the state’s nursing homes already have AEDs, but Rep. Natalie Manley (D-Joliet) said every facility should have the equipment.

Her bill’s effective date would be January 1, 2030, to allow nursing homes sufficient time to buy AEDs.

"The average cost is $1,500 to $3,000 depending on the model chosen," Manley said. "Some cost more. Almost 40% of the homes have found ways to pay for AEDs."

This plan passed unanimously out of the House and now moves to the Senate. Sen. Doris Turner has an identical bill, but her proposal did not pass out of committee before the Senate committee deadline last month.
